I was trolling around the web last night and I found this page:
VNC over ssh on OS X Tiger Server (link is dead)
I set up a slight variation of this and, lo and behold, it works. Here’s a snapshot of me connected from work to my server at home.
Of course, it’s too painfully slow to do anything real, but it’s nice to know that I can drive the box remotely in a pinch.
So I have this running on my Mini but it’s really slow. I installed the VNC Server on my outgoing XP Server and it’s reasonably responsive. All tests done via a connection from work to home over SSH tunneling. So if this is going to be a reasonable way for me to manage my server remotely I’ll have to figure out a way to improve VNC server performance.
It is definitely slow. Another oddity I noticed: Talking to the server from a PC client is faster than with CotVNC on the Mac.
Keep in mind though, the Mac GUI is significantly more graphics intensive than Windows (pre-Vista). [You can’t send the string to be displayed over the wire, when it’s being painted to a backstore before you get to see it.]
